Jim Miller (1926 -2012) joined the RAAF towards the end of the Second World War, a period when big bands were a large part of the popular music scene. He began collecting musical arrangements and mastered various instruments including the saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and string bass.
This knowledge gave him a wonderful understanding of exactly how the various sections of a big band combine.
Jim’s band has been part of the musical scene in Toowoomba for over twenty years playing at various functions as well as music in the park. Carnival of Flowers’ weekend is the busiest time with performances on the Saturday at Laurel Bank Park and Sunday at Spring Bluff Railway Station. The band specialise in playing the original arrangements from some of the great bands of the BIG BAND ERA including Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
The band has a very large repertoire of jazz standards and big band hits. As there are around twenty musicians, a large indoor space or the open air are the most suitable venues.
Both male and female vocalists perform with the band.
Musicians who appreciate this type of music are always welcome.
