31st October – The View from Madeline’s Couch

Bossa Nova Sunset Club”

Take flight for a night in Rio de Janeiro with The View From Madeleine’s Couch.

From the beach-side lounges and bars of Rio de Janeiro in the 1950s, came the cultural and musical phenomenon that is bossa nova. And from Brisbane, comes Australia’s most accomplished interpreters of this rich and beautiful music.

Experience an evening of hypnotic bossa nova rhythms and Brazilian jazz, taking you straight to Copacabana beach at sunset, with classic repertoire from the legendary composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, including Garota de Ipanema (The Girl From Ipanema) and Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), songs from Marcos Valle and Astrud Gilberto, and a taste of the band’s award-winning original music.

The band’s sound and style is unique to Brazilian music in Australia, with co-founders Anje West and Kym Ambrose  living in Rio de Janeiro for 11 months over the past 20 years, studying and performing with some of Brazil’s most respected artists. They are joined for this special show by Sean Flynn on guitar, Paul Hudson on drums, and on double bass, Helen Russell, who is a beloved Toowoomba-born musician with a rich, musical family history in the region.

Anje West (voice, percussion), is one of Brisbane’s queens of song, with over 30 years experience across multiple vocal disciplines. She is celebrated as one of Australia’s finest interpreters of bossa nova, singing in fluent Portuguese, and sharing songs and stories with warmth and heart.

Kym Ambrose (vibraphone), has received accolades from international artists for his work in adapting his technique and instrument to bossa nova and Brazilian jazz – music that is traditionally centered around the guitar. He is one of Australia’s finest vibes players.

Helen Russell (double bass), is one of Queensland’s most experienced and versatile bassists, having played regularly with some of the best singers and instrumentalists in the country. She is, of course, well known to Toowoomba audiences!

Paul Hudson (drums), is well known for his exceptional work with Swing Central, Good Bait, Women in Voice, and countless other ensembles who all benefit from his innate groove and impeccable time.

Sean Flynn (guitar), is one of Brisbane’s leading jazz guitarists, with a sound and style all his own. He has performed with the city’s most popular jazz ensembles, and regularly appears at the Brisbane Jazz Club.
